Jean Colonna
Born: 1965, Oran, Algeria.

Jean-Paul Gaultier
Born: 1952, Arcueil, France.
Gaultier had no formal fashion training. Instead, he sent hundreds of his sketches to various couture houses. Pierre Cardin was impressed by the work and hired Gaultier as a design assistant in 1970. A frequenter of gay clubs in London, he typically incorporates elements of gay style into his collections. Gaultier launched his first collection in 1976.

Quote: All my design comes from taking something that already exists and working on changing it in some way. Look underneath the way I have twisted it to make it ‘Gaultier’ and things are fairly conservative. And that attitude stretches beyond my work, into wider issues.

Jean-Paul Knott
Born: 1960, Brussels, Belgium.

Quote: It’s about a sporty woman who doesn’t work Ñ or who doesn’t think about work when she is wearing these clothes. Louis Féraud came from Cannes and it’s that Cannes attitude of being a bit over the top sometimes. The Féraud woman is blonde.

John Galliano
Born: 1969, Gibraltar, Spain.
Galliano attended the prestigious Central St. Martin’s School of Art at London where he met the talented designer John Flett, but the relationship, did not last. In July 1995, Bernard Arnault, president of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, announced that Galliano was to be appointed the new designer for the House of Givenchy. The French press was enraged that a British gay designer had been chosen head designer at a house considered part of their national heritage.

Quote: When I sit down to talk about forecasts and planning, I can tell they’re quite impressed, but sometimes it’s just easier to play the enfant terrible. I think it’s expected of me.
